Our aim is to ERADICATE SOCIAL ISOLATION amongst Little People seniors 55+ by providing them with a sense of community.

The needs of seniors who have dwarfism are very different than the needs of an average senior. We have created a specific project for seniors who have dwarfism that can be accessed digitally all across Canada.

Objective

Our objective with this program is to support HEALTHY AGEING. Our program helps alleviate additional stress that Little People seniors in our community may encounter. The program has a multifaceted structure that addresses many issues that seniors may face.

In addition to the session content and engagement, we conclude every session with a closing circle, where individuals share their feelings about any desired topic in a safe space. All the seniors are paired with an “accountability buddy” who would help them foster additional relationships with each other.

Examples

Examples of our program include sessions that support seniors’ digital literacy. With the digital world changing so fast it can be a struggle to keep up with the latest technology. It would address any questions that seniors might have and educate them about the various digital scams that are happening and how to stay digitally safe.

There is also a special focus on mental health and mental fitness as we age.

Our workshops also provide financial empowerment and independence for seniors in the community, reducing the potential for abuse they may face.

Access

It started when COVID-19 was our new reality and we are providing this program fully online. Meaning anyone across Canada can attend from the comfort of their home. COVID-19 has also made a lot of people feel isolated and our program is helping alleviate that condition.

While these sessions can easily be converted to in-person sessions, we will always provide an online hybrid option. We have found video conference meetings/sessions (Zoom, Teams etc.) increases the program’s accessibility. It is one way to reduce the barriers put in place by a society built for average-sized non-disabled individuals when our LP Community is not average-sized nor able-bodied.
